One of the main purposes of education is to evolve as a healthy individual who is productive and aware. It is a well-established fact that a sound body can hold and sound mind. Keeping this in view, education systems have incorporated physical education in their curricula, responding to our need of the growing needs of physical fitness in our modern lifestyle. Along with a number of crucial components that have been identified by UNICEF to enhance the deliverance of good quality education, physical education is one of them. Physical education curriculum includes sports and opportunities for play, for the optimum development of a child and in consistence with the rights of the child. Physical fitness promotes good health and can be a leisure activity as well, that enables him / her to keep fit and learn their lessons at the same time. These activities also offer great mental relaxation, which in turn helps the student to concentrate and focus more on his/, her study.
Children spend a major part of their day in school sitting and at the end of the day, feel lethargic and exhausted. This has an adverse and undeniable effect on a child’s body. In order to strive as healthy and smart adults in this world, children need to be taught how to lead a fit life. The purpose of physical education involves more than training the body, an understanding that fitness and physical training helps the mind. For young children, playing games has been recognized as a valuable, even essential, component of learning.
CBSE empowered the students to participate in physical activity and understand how this influences their own well–being and that of others. While for academics the choices for providing supplementary aids like CBSE online free study material, are abundant, physical education is constrained by the demands of the particular activity. Our education system would do good to demonstrate to students how physical education benefits the life style and encourages student to participate in sports. Students should be provided with opportunities to challenge themselves to develop their physical and interpersonal skills. They tend to appreciate the joy of learning and understand the role that it plays in their lives.
According to the National Association for Sports and Physical Education, here are some of the qualities a child will have if physical education is implemented in the curriculum:
• Improved physical fitness: If a child is physically active, it improves his/her muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, body composition and cardiovascular endurance.
• Skill development: Physical education develops motor skills, allowing for safe, successful and satisfying participation in physical activities.
• Regular, healthy physical activity: It provides a wide range of physical activities for children ensuring the development of children in their peak time of growth.
• Support of other subject areas: It reinforces knowledge learned across the curriculum.
Serves as a lab for application of content in science, math and social studies.
• Improved judgment: It also influences the moral development of a child. Students get the opportunity to develop leadership qualities, cooperation, question actions and regulations and accept responsibility for their own behavior.
• Stress reduction: Tension and anxiety can be released and it facilitates emotional stability and resilience.
• Build self-confidence and self-esteem: Physical education is capable of instilling a deeper and stronger sense of self-worth in children based on their mastery of skills and concept in physical activity. It helps an individual to become all the more confident, assertive, independent and self-controlled.
Students who take part in sports are able to visualize themselves as a part of a team which builds in them a team spirit which is essential in shaping their future. It is time that any country realizes the importance of physical education to be implemented in the curriculum
